Simple answer. Greed. They want to pilfrage untapped lands to get gold, tin, spices and other precious commodities. Some history books will tell you that it's main reason is to spread Christianity and to introduce civilization to barbaric tribes. Noble but the events that unfolded does fit into that kind of reasoning.
Same thing happening with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It is greed. The US wants oil. They are really not interested in killing Sadam Hussein. They need the oil from these countries to save their ailing economy. The US dollar is weakening and will never gain its strength anymore.
In short, its greed.
