You gave him too much info at once. If he was watching TV, thinking of sports, or even thinking of work he wasn't paying enough attention to catch all you said and process it.

All you needed to say was: "Don't write any checks, we only have $30 in the account." If he wanted more info he would have asked and then you would have had all his attention and he would have known what you said.

You also forgot to remind him not to use the debit card. which draws from the checking account.. This is one of the biggest money makers for the bank, on overdraft fees and bounced checks.
