Wood can be bent into all kinds of shapes usually with water or steam and time. Plastics can be extruded - pushed through a cut out - into many shapes likes tubes, triangles, etc. while still warm or wet. They harden when dry. Easier than trying to bend and glue them!

Wood can be formed in very complex ways if it is thin enough. Molded wood chair seats are made of veneer thin sheets that are softened with steam and several are laid down and then pressed with heat to dry the wood and set the glue. Multiple layers give strength.
Acrylic plastic (Plexiglas) can be bought as round rods or tubes. With heat just above the boiling point of water, it becomes soft and floppy while not being so hot it can't be handled with thick cotton gloves. Making it exactly round is a matter of shaping it around a form and strapping it quickly then gluing the seam later. Acrylic has the interesting property that if you heat it again it will recover the form it first had.
