Hi there. I bought a Silenx Ixtrema pro (at 28-32 CFM, with a dba of 14) and I would of thoguht that would of quieted it down a little. My computer is as loud as ever, And I think it even got a little warmer (the case it hot when I touch it after a while)
This CFM Rating is probabily much lower than what the label says it is.

The power supply is the culprit. The model is a cheifmax 550 and it just wont quiet down. I was thinking that I could use the new fan as the power supply fan, because I read somewhere that power supplies use standard fans.

What can I do to make my power supply shut up?

Your PSU could be using a temp controlled fan that revs up and gets noisy when hot. Changing to a lower rpm/quiet fan may cause inadequate cooling of the PSU and shorten its life.

Possible options:
1. Improve case ventilation so that PSU's intake is cooler air. You should have a good intake fan up front and a strong (but not noisy) exhaust fan at the rear just below the PSU.

2. Consider a better case w/ 120mm intake and 120mm exhaust fans. These large fans move a lot of air without getting noisy.

3. Should you consider to replace your PSU, get one w/ a 120mm fan. I've also seen quite a few PSU running two 80mm fans silently on push-pull arrangement.

A quick Google search for "change power supply fan" reveals that, yes, it is possible to change the fan in a PSU. Provided you're comfortable with opening it up and voiding the warranty, it should be doable.

stick rubber gasket between the joints of the power supply and the case, also little rubber pieces where you bolt the fan. and make sure everything is bolted down tight
