I found a thread that says that External Hard drives will work if they are formatted in FAT32 off a PC. Even after you do this, you can only use it for music and movies and such. Not for games.

I don't know if the external hard drives are compatible, but I don't see why they wouldn't be. Go to us.playstation.com and email customer support to find out if it is compatible for the PS3 or not. I have the 60GB version so I don't think that I'll ever need to use an external harddrive. The only disadvantage of having a external hard drive is that it can be stolen or easily misplaced. The internal hard drive is screwed in the PS3, but it can be taken out.

no the external hard drives are not compatible with the ps3
