Yes get a wired router to hook two machines to the Internet.
If you just want to hook two machines up without the Internet, you can create your own network with a router.

You need a router. Connect the router to the cable modem Lan connection, then connect the pcs to the router with standard cat5 cables, NOT cross-over. Previous answers do not set up a shared cable connection.

Your first computer needs to have an extra network card.

The IP settings of Network card from the first computer should be 192.168.0.1. And set IP of the second computer 192.168.0.2 and gateway should be 192.168.0.1 then use crossover cable and connect two computers .
