Here's what it means to me... If you are telling someone a story, or trying to sell them something you would want to 'hit the high spots' by emphasizing the important parts of the sentence (or conversation) that you know would be important to the listener.

It means to take the most important and vital area/sections of a topic or a reading.

Leave the added details, the extra 'color' of the piece, and hit (notice) the high spots (the most important bits.)
