I own one and came across some hard-to-believe stories about its performance, reliability and dependability. Other than its simple design which wasn't change for a very long time and being the most sold car in history, it doesn't seem to look like much. Maybe the stories were true, am just not convinced enough

I owned one several years ago, and when I sold it, I felt like I'd sold my soul. I'm currently looking for now. I had a '73 standard Beetle, and I rarely had to perform any repairs other than routine maintenance. Parts were (and still are) inexpensive, and my 1600 c.c. engine chugged along with no problems. I think the most amazing thing about my Beetle was that I NEVER got stuck in the snow. Our snowfall here in Virginia isn't too bad, but in the "blizzard" of March 1993, I was tooling along on roads that only 4-wheel drives would dare travel. Yes, I made mine float (by accident!) one time when it flooded in my area, and I came down a back country road that was underwater. I think I went about 40 feet on nothing but 3 feet of water, with no leaks.

God, I want my bug back...
