no I just replaced two cats on my 89 ranger v6 at a local muffler shop with a muffler and a tailpipe cost me $350 they have universal Cats that fit any car for about 100 to 200 each. your car is newer so the cats may be three way cats they cost a little more. but a V6 will have two maybe even 4 cats and they probably will need all repaced. My 2000 crown victoria has 4 cats, I dread the day I have to replace all of them.

If you lived in Anaheim, CA Anchor muffler on Anaheim blvd is pretty good thats where I get all my exhaust work done. dont do it your self just pay some one to do it right.

If the catalytic converter goes bad you need to replace the whole thing. Take it somewhere else and get a different opinion. It sounds pretty steep to me. But hubby does that kind of thing himself.

Autohouse Warehouse quotes a $366 just for the part, which is the whole catalytic converter. Just the converter is $156 So the balance of your quote must be for labor. All they have to do is cut off the old one and weld on the new one.

You might check with a VoTech school that has auto repair classes and see how much they would charge you.

Or get a guy friend to take it in and see what kind of price he can get. I think some repair places will treat women as stupid when it comes to repairs and overcharge cause we don't know no better. HA!

Take a look here: http://www.exhaustwarehouse.com/

I looked at catalytic converters for your car and they all cost about $350 plus shipping. I wasn't sure what type of transmission type you have. Keep in mind that these are aftermarket parts and not ford parts. A ford part will be much more expensive but completely unnecessary.

To swap out a catalytic converter on your car takes about an hour. I have done it myself in less time albeit with a lift and air tools. In any case, that's about $80 so I'd expect a bill of about $500.

The $1,500 quote seems very expensive to me. I'd take it somewhere else for a second opinion.

Oh ya, you don't fix catalytic converters. If they stop working, you replace it.

Good Luck!

Catalytic converters are usually replaced, not repaired. It should only cost $500 or $600 for parts and labor. If you shop around, you might be able to get it replaced for less that that. Whoever quoted you $1500 either doesn't know what they are talking about, or they are trying to rip you off (if the person is a mechanic).

technically its a catalytic converter and the quoted price seems pretty ridicuolous. You could definately replace more than the catalytic converter and the whole exhaust sytem for less than that. Look up the part online or go to an auto parts store and price a new one. If you know anyone with a welder they could probably do it for you for a 12 pack.

Dealers and Repair People think their butt weighs a ton and the other half can't be weighed. NO, it does not cost $1500 for a catalytic converter, but, you have to have one. It is under your car hooked to the muffler system. Find a guy with a wrench.

Call ford parts at a dealership and ask them for the price of a new one and install it yourself. Look on the internet and search for cheaper converters. Try J.C. Whitney, or other auto parts places like autozone too. good luck

Whoever quoted that price is ripping you off. Shouldn't be more than a couple hundred for the cats. Don't you ever pay that much for 2 little pipes.
