We recently just bought a HP Officejet 5610 All in One printer that claimed to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. We have an intel iMac running Mac OS X 10.4.9. The printer had a quick response and printed fine last night but now we are getting an error saying "Idle" in the Apple printer window when we go to print a document to this printer.

The printer is on. The USB connections are tight and secure. The software is installed properly. The drivers are fine. Startting/Stopping and/or Holding/Resuming the job does not help and only goes to an "opening printer connection" error message.

Any help is appreciated.....

Idle means it didn't get anything to print: sitting idle.

If it received a job but didn't print, it would have said something about "print job received" or something like that and flash a paper error.

Sounds like a cabling problem to me.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to open the Printer Setup Utility (applications/utilities folder), delete the printer from the list, then rescan for available printers.

Click "add" in the printer list and see if it shows up. If not, try powering off the printer and turning it back on.
