Yes. We are WAY too self centered and materialistic. We want stuff. We want lots of stuff. If I could only have THAT stuff I could be happy. I want your stuff. I want her stuff. I want MORE stuff. I thought I wanted that stuff but it's not the RIGHT stuff so I need to keep looking for better stuff.

Happiness isn't in what you have. Unhappiness is in the always wanting something. Satisfaction in the getting is brief. As soon as we get we want something else. It's a never ending cycle.

I would say yes. We are taught in this country to compete and out do other people. Everything in this country is so money and property oriented . Its all about what car you drive how big your house is. Compared to other countries the US is very materialistic. When I was in Kuwait I saw how families were living and it was just sad. I think the future of our country will always have materialism involved and there will always be negative effects there. People have to understand that when you die you can't take your property with you.

Yes I do think the US is too materialistic, although I don't think we're the only country that is, but I think the cause matters more than the symptom. I think it has a negative impact on many people in the US and other countries now.

Of course the US is too materialistic! Look around you!!
Kids get killed in poor communities for name brand shoes for heavens sakes!
Teenage girls throw tantrums if they can't have the same thing their friend or the popular girl have.
I haven't personaly seen any statistics on "mental health" from other countries, but I bet the US is real high on the graph!!! AND why? because of parents teaching their children that they need this and need that to be excepted in society!!!
I believe it will have a negative effect on the future and work, but who am I to really say? I'm not materialistic! :-)

Well, you can't expect a third world country to be materialistic. There's materialistic people in all countries that can afford to be. Besides that, there's nothing wrong with liking nice things.

I think our country is more lazy than materialistic.

Proabably yes, they are too focused on economic liberalism, and not enough on social liberalism. The countries with the best quality of life have hybrid economies (social liberalism), which is the best compromise and produces the least worst outcomes, if that makes sense.

Conversely, "reducing poverty" in the sense of helping poor people acquire goods could be construed as pro-"materialistic."

The stereotype is too materialistic, but the majority of Americans I meet are really great people.

Not when plasma TV's are coming down in price and I can buy a new car I don't need with "no money down!"

We are spoiled rotten and consume 4 times what other countries do.

Well, according to our reigning king of the airwaves (Cho) we are not only too materialistic, but also morally deficient.

He may be wrong, but then again, he may be right, yannow?
