A friend of mine says that she can hear what she says sounds like light or socket switches flicking on and off in the middle of the night. Her eldest son says that he's heard it too.

I'm convinced that it's something to do with the electrics, but am at a loss as to explain it.

She can't say for sure that it doesn't happen during the day, but she hasn't noticed it.

Does anyone have any idea what this mightbe because it's driving her nuts.

Probably pipes expanding or contracting, why not get out of bed and locate the source of the sound?? It certainly won't be light switches going on and off by themselves, you would see the light if it was.

It could be the refrigerator trying to go into its defrost cycle. Most refrigerator freezers have an auto defrost system that is on a timer and kick in during the night when there is little usage of the unit. Check the freezer and see if you see any unusual build up of frost. I am not sure how often you are hearing these clicks or just how often the defrost cycle is supposed to be clicking. Listen by the refrigerator next time you think it is about time for your nightly serenade.

Do you have sensor lights outside ,this could be it ,other wise what the man said about the heating switching on/off ,these would be contactors ,or a timeclock of some sort. Have your son look in the attic and don't worry as it may be something small.

If the sound is popping out of your laptop & not your audio equipment, that is probably your confusing stress having access to the guidance. there is frequently some noise at the same time as that is doing this. if your laptop is on the older ingredient each and every so often that is a demonstration that the confusing stress could fail quickly. To be on the secure ingredient, decrease back up any important data. you may constantly reinstall the working equipment on a sparkling stress, yet data that are actually not backed up are confusing to impossible to recover from a failed stress.

Probably part of the electrics that controls the central heating. It's probably making the noise all the time, but she only notices it at night. Tell he to stand by the airing cupboard/boiler and listen for it.

cavity wall ties can make clicking noises, but the worst for that is those wardrobes with metal runners and frames contracting due to the falling temperature at night. Pipes dont contract all night long, only the first hour mostly

could be earwax. sometimes it starts being made rapidly and you hear a scrunchy clicky sound.

but if it is the electrics she should get it checked by someone, wouldnt take that long to find a short circuit somewere that maybe a mouse has chewed through! better get it checked then to wake up to a huge fire! or worse, not wake up at all!

Could be an insect or beastie in the cavity wall. ( Death Watch Beetle makes a clicking noise ). They get active when things are quiet She needs to get up and locate noise as if it is a mouse or something it means they are eating and breeding.

It may be a light switch, electrical recepticle or a light fixture arching. Strongly suggest that you call an electrician.
