Any person must indeed be dead before being considered for sainthood. The process starts when the person has seemed to cause miracles to persons who have prayed to him/her. For example, recently, a nun has ascribed a cure of a disease to the intervention of the late Pope John Paul II.

People who are saints were saints while they lived, but they can not be proven saint until after death. So they can not be cannonized Saints until after death and often it takes years. People may call living people saints because the persons good actions make others think that they are saints but you are never recognized as a saint till you have died.

No, and yes.
Saints are people in heaven or on their way to heaven. All Christians dead and alive are saints.
The Catholic Church selects some of the most extraordinary examples, does in-depth research, and canonizes them.
"By canonizing some of the faithful, i.e., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God's grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness within her and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as models and intercessors."
The person must be dead for at least 5 years before the canonization process can begin. Pope Benedict XVI waived this rule for Pope John Paul II.
With love in Christ.

According to the catholics, Yes,
According to the Bible, When one receives salvation and walks in pursuit of Christ, he/she is already a saint.
It takes no special ceremony, nor votes ,nor good deeds being done, nor physical death.
It's that ridiculously simple.
It is not man's job,or place, to designate anyone to sainthood, only God's above !
That's that !
