The reasoning is simple: People in this country, no matter what they say to your face, ar racially biased and simple minded. No one, except the liberals will come out and say that no woman or minority should be president of this country.
When it comes to prejudice, this country is still one of the worst. It is mostly closet type prejudice, and will continue to be so because of "forced" understanding. While I believe Affirmative Action was adecent thing, it was not the right thing. A person should not be hired based upon a racial quotient the government puts out, rather they should be hired based on merit.
In the past, we have had people like Geraldine Ferraro, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson run for the Presidency. The nation was not voting against women in general, just voting against Ferraro. She did not have a positive political background and it showed. Sharpton and Jackso are just two individuals who are very racially biased, and righteously so. The nation was not voting against blacks, just these two.
Now, we have Hilary and Barack running, and to tell you the truth, Barack gets my vote. Hilary ran the country for 8 years, and is not even representing Arkansas in the Senate. Where is her loyalty to that state? Barack is very well spoken , speaks as an American, not a politician, and I for one hope he gets the nomination and the White House.

The United States is a very sexist (see answer above), racist and classist country. We enslaved blacks, murdered the red people for their land and kept women as second class citizens who did not get the right to vote until 1920. Our presidents usually come from a pool of rich white men with corporate connections.
You are not going to see anything different in the White House until America becomes a democratic country with truly equal opportunity for all. Obama and Hillary don't have a chance. It is pretty sad really because there have been several female country leaders in Europe, Africa and Asia and it is embarassing that the USA has never had one.

We did have some females run for president, the most competent was Geraldine Ferraro.
We've had a number of females in the cabinet, and believe it or not, we also had a female secretary of the Air Force, the ranking #4 in the military chain of command (equal to the secretaries of the Army and Navy and lower in rank that only the secretary of defense, VP and Pres).
Asia, on the other hand, at one time had 6 female national leaders at the same time in:
the Pilippines
Indonesia
India
Malaysia
...doggonit, forgot the other two...

I tend to vote for the candidate who I think is best qualified and represents my positions and interests on ISSUES. Gender and race really are irrelevant.

Because women have recently just got their full rights not even a half century ago. Back before the 70's I bet women didn't even think about becoming the president, or a politician even... Maybe a little in the 60's.
You can also blame it on Catholic rule if you really want to look in depth into it.

That is a pretty empty thought......why base your vote on gender or race. You say someone new.....a different person is someone new.

when you get me a credible candidate I will consider it. What you've got is a socialist wench, and an inexperienced senator. Got to do a little better than that in my opinion.
