Because Virginia Tech hits closer to home... and this news is more surprising. There are news reports everyday of killings in Iraq, due to bombs, etc... for many, it's "old" news (sorry to say).
But I think it is important that they should feature both.

Because 180 people dying in Iraq isn't news anymore. American troops and Iraqi citizens have been targeted for a few years with bombs, and it's old news.
However, it is news that a crazy South Korean guy killed 32 people and injured 29 others. Especially because he had a previous history of mental illness but nothing was done, he was released in 1 day from an institution, needed nothing but driver's license to buy 2 guns, first shooting at dorm didn't prompt a lockdown, and it happened in Virginia.

I have been thinking about the same thing.
You know, we are so used to seeing news reports about killings in the mideast that we may forget the severety. Every day people in the mideast, especially Iraq, die due to violence rather than natural causes.
It is obviously VERY important for us to minimize and extinguish that kind of violence here in the homeland. We want to feel safe and secure. We usually do, which is why it draws our attention when something like this happens. We want the rest of the world to feel safe and secure as well. That's one of the reasons we fight for freedom over seas.
I wonder something though... how many of the innocent people who died in Iraq would kill an American or a Jew if they had the opportunity and knew they could get away with it? After pondering that I ask how many of the VA Tech victims would have killed ANYONE if they had the chance and knew they could get away with it? I'm guessing zero.
Chances are greater that we'd find many more people with the will to kill in Iraq than in an American classroom. We're not breeding haters and destroyers of life here in America. We're shocked when something like that pops up here.
Why are we not shocked when innocent people are killed in the islam-infested middle east? Take a wild guess.

Iraq is further away, and is a war zone. The car bomb murders there are "routine" atrocities and we have got used to inhumanity by one sectarian group to another, from exposure to it in Ireland, the former Jugoslavia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and Israel, to name just a few. It's appalling but we have come to expect this in these killing grounds.
We don't expect it in a school, in a peaceful community, it's too close to home. Hence the shock and outrage - I feel it too, and I'm not even American. Here in Australia and New Zealand, you are in our prayers right now...
That doesn't mean we shouldn't care about the car bombings in Iraq too, but they are a daily occurence.

Cause VT is easier to cover and everyone and their dog can swarm VT with a camera and mic. So in consequence you have more sound bites and footage to inundate the media. Iraq is a little harder to get to and thus very little media except for the few AP photos and Iraqi sources, most of which don't land on prime time here.

Because the Iraqi and the Arab/Muslim People let that be a part of their culture. They... allow it.
We do not condone nor allow such behavior in the US/Canada European/ Western World. It is sad and revolting. If the Arab/Muslim world would stand up and not let our poor soldiers do their budding then it would stop there as well. It is horrific wherever killings and murder take place.
Like the VT Killer (coward) the Car Bombing Muslim/Arab Fundamentalist are cowards as well. I wish they would just stand up and be men, not hide and kill children and innocent people for the sake of those pieces of crap they listen to.

Because people tend to care about their OWN- first. Plus- the war in Iraq has been going on every day for 4 years now, so lots of people dying is nothing new. 32 kids getting gunned down on a College campus in "Anytown U.S.A."- catches people's attention. -It gets things alittle too "close"- for comfort...

maybe its cuz Virgina is IN the U.S and the students killed are just college ppl.
While in Iraq which is across the ocean, ppl at home don't really get the same impact as the V.T.

It's war. People are expected to die. Virginia Tech was a school. When you enlist in the army and go to Iraq, you know that it is possible that you will die, but when you walk into a classroom in school, you dont expect to die.
