I believe it was a long list of complaints about the Catholic church that Martin Luther wrote nailed upon the door of a large church in late-renaissance Europe. That's pretty much what started the Protestant Reformation.

The ninety-five theses was Luther's response to Catholic abuses such as indulgences which was placed at the Brandenburg Church door on October 31,1517which began the Protestant Reformation throughout Western Europe.

Martin Luther wrote the 95 Theses. It was basically a criticism of the Catholic Church's policies. It eventually helped inspire the split of the Protestant church (now split into many denominations, including of course Lutheran), although that was not Luther's original intent.
