((well first you can ask her and a local pet shop.)) Rabbits are really hard to take care of, you have to make sure your grandmother is up for the responsibility. I have 4 rabbits; i suggest the Siberian, Chinchilla, American Sable, Champagne D'Argent, Cinnamon, Creme D'Argent, Dutch, Florida White, Harlequin, Havana, Hotot, Mini Lop, Mini Rex, Rex. You might want to do some research on all of these breeds.

Ignore the facetious remarks. If your Granny would like a rabbit speak to you local pet shop owner or a Vet.to find out which would be most suitable, not one that grows to be a great big heavy one. Most older people love gentle pet, visit any hospice to see the reaction when someone brings in a Labrador, they all want to pat and stroke it.

Honestly, a rabbit wouldn't be the best pet for an 86-year-old lady. Mostli because they can live to be as old as 15 and I'm not entirly sure if your grandmother will live that long (no offense) and if, god forbid, your grandmother dies first, no one in her family may want/have time to care for it.
I'd suggest maybe a parakeet or a hamster.

You are sure she does not want to eat it? Many elderly people remeber when it was a very common delicacy. In pies, roast, stews.
Aside though, most rabbits can be house trained VERY quickly, they will use a loo tray and if you have enough space then they will use one end for "firsts", eat it again and the other end for "seconds".
We had one for several years and he just hopped around our house and mixed with our large lurcher, our cat and us. He went into the garden au volante and was less trouble than the kids.
Make sure he is mixxy innoculated.
Please, please do not put them in a hutch, they need space, at least a couple of meters to run around. Hutches are cruel and worse than chicken factory farming as rabbits are intelligent animals.

Due to her age, you wouldn't want to get the heavier types. Look into Mini Lops, and other miniature breeds of rabbits. Are you willing to take care of this rabbit, if anything happens to your grandma (knock on wood)?

When elderly people get a new young pet, there should always be someone as a ''back up'' owner.

Get a dwarf rabbit.

I will suggest that you get a dwarf hotot. They are cute and small. Most women want a small rabbit and dwarfs are just right for that. A little rabbit would be best for your granny.

Tell her I said Happy Birthday.

why dont you go to a animal selter and pick up a older rabbit that might neeed a good home and it will have a shorter lifespan than a baby rabbit and you can get full breeds somethimes and if ur lucky they are litter trained =D good luck anyway

I honestly don't think she should get a rabbit at her age. I had one when I was 10 and I had a lot of trouble with taking care
of it. If you really want to get one get her a lop.

How neat! Go to a pet shop- & ask them for the "lowest maintanance" rabbit they have (you don't want to give her TOO much work to do), plus a months supply of food for it. She'll be thrilled. :)
