A girl I know lives there has one kid, is physically fit and works 15-20 hours a week. I don't mind helping those in need & I think the play ground is a good idea. What I don't understand is since the taxpayers are paying most of their rent, Why would they install a swimming pool and a fitness center!!! What are your thoughts?

From MO here also, and we make it easy for people to receive public assistance. I do believe that most of the assistance in now short term. Is this friend in college because that may be the reason for her short work week. As far as the pool and fitness center goes, i think it is ridiculous and glamorizes public assistance

I suppose it might be because many low income families are low income because one or several family members have physical problems. They might benefit from exercise.

Keeping the kids in the families out of trouble might also be a consideration (though I'm not sure how well it would work). Still, giving them (the kids too old for the playground) at least the chance of doing something fun and constructive without having to pay money they don't have seems like a good idea to me - it gives them an outlet for all their extra energy and might therefore potentially prevent some from getting in trouble.

If you think about it, the pool and the fitness room are actually a lot like the playground, just aimed at a different age group.

Why install a swimming pool and a fitness center in low income housing?

A. Because it only costs money and donated money is easy to spend.
B. The idea of low income housing is letting low income people share the American Dream, and part of that is having luxuries like a swimming pool and a fitness center. After all if they are low income wager earners they can't afford to buy a gym membership or to go to a pool.

Could the money be better spent? Yes, but normally these kind of projects are someone's "pet" project so a group or individuals donate specifically to help that housing project. Thus the extra money has to be spent.

I'm sorry, did you want a ready built slum?
Is it OK to allow for fat butts in the poor?
Do you know the cost and availability of day care in your area? Part time may be all she can afford right now.
The cost of medical insurance alone keeps people on welfare of one sort or another, if you have a child you know how important that is. Or do you think poor kids shouldn't have heath care?
I see that its for low income families, not singles. So we are talking about kids here. I think too many people think that poverty is something to be punished or made more uncomfortable than it already is.
If a tenant has pride in place, its upkeep goes down, that saves the taxpayer some money right there.
I'm pretty sure that gym is pretty bare bones compared to others, and that pool is going to be so crowded in the summer that swimming will be slow and bumpy.
Last I heard we have stopped building dungeons.

Did they build low income, or affordable housing? Some communities HAVE to build such house or lose their government funding. Our community have to build them and boy was there an uproar until the people understood that affordable didn't mean slums.

Misguided do gooding politicians is what you have. It is happening all over the United States with "affordable housing" programs that tax those who barely afford homes to give to those who can't. I'm not against home ownership for the poor but wouldn't we be better off "teaching them" something job worthy so they can afford a home then giving them one?

Your thoughts are my thoughts. This fitness center will be torn up in no time and kids will probably not be supervised in the pool. At least not when Judge Judy and Oprah are on.
