First of all to Abbycoug - there is absolutely no need to be insulting and rude. This is an opinion exchange forum. As for the subject at hand, I think it's just lazyness, carelessness and an acceptance of mediocrity as the norm. Here's another one - sea anemones pronounced sea anenemies (it's not an enemy) It's not that difficult to say nuclear = new clear (2 syllables) as opposed to nucular (noo/nyu kyu lar 3 syllables) jewell(ery) not Jew(lery) - it's a jewell not a jew in a ring. However, every time this subject comes up here (in addition to attrocious spelling and grammar) the intrepid and fearless protectors of mediocrity come flying out of the woodwork attacking anyone who dares to put forth this question. They shout "It's the idea that's important not the spelling, pronunciation or grammar" Well, actually pride in one's linguistic skills adds more credence to their ideas. That's my 2 cents' worth. (from another mom/grandma LOL)

Yea I think it's crazy how so many people say 'realator.' Have you ever seen "Guess Who" with Ashton Kutcher? He says 'realator' in that movie. Also, I hate when people say 'nucular' and not 'nuclear' (cough...George W. Bush...cough). I have to point my finger at myself, though, because I say 'carmel' rather than 'caramel.' Yes, I think that these words are changed forever because you can't let everybody in the English-speaking language learn the correct way of saying these words. That's my two cents.

A lot of times it is local dialect....especially carmel/caramel. Another example is nucular/nuclear. Hahahha. Anyway, it doesn't bother me to the point of becoming annoyed, but it certainly could give someone a bad initial impression of your intelligence. (Not that I am a brain surgeon or anything)

Yes! And it drives me crazy! Enunciate for ... sake! People who don't speak properly sound ignorant, and/or lazy ...
How about: ta instead of to, fur instead of for, her instead of here, ern instead of iron ... oh boy, I could go on & on!
