Road tax helps pay for the maintenance of the roads and building new ones. A parking permit allows you the permission you need to park somewhere that you already helped pay for. A parking ticket pays for....etc.......

road tax pays for road maintenance, nationwide. Road maintenance costs depend strongly on axle weight (power law), so if you're a car driver, this is the one to get upset about - you subsidise truckers.

(of course they bring food to your shops, so...)

parking permit costs are a way of limiting the number of people parking in a particular place. It goes to your local council's overall budget, and is spent on healthcare, benefits, flowers in parks, dubious public artworks, etc; some good things and some not so good things.

A permanent private parking space (in a weed-strewn yard) in my town costs as much in a month as a parking permit costs in a year.

Maybe you could have a go at the City Car Club - it might save you some serious wedge. Google it.

Because your neighbours wanted to limit and control access to parking. So they lobbied their councillor who got the council to introduce, run and police a permit scheme. And since it'd be unfair to expect the whole community to cough up for something that is only available for certain streets, they make the residents of that street pay for it (and probably add a slice on top to spend on good and not so good things).

So now you want the benefits of a parking scheme but don't want to pay for it?

In the words of Mayor Quimby, "Are they getting dumber or louder?"

If you have the resident parking outside your house, you can have it removed and no pay but don't complain if someone else parks there.

It's government mandated and they'll take it wherever they can.
Worse than the mafia, and vapid voters don't have it in them to change it... ;-)
