venus.

It's the planet Venus. It's the brightest object apart from the sun and moon. The ancients named this after the Greek goddess of love and peace, due to its beautiful pure-white appearance in the evening sky.

Venus will appear very close to the crescent moon this evening (20 April.) It will stay with us for another couple of months, but it will appear to get closer & closer to the sun and therefore set earlier and earlier. It will also get even brighter as it approaches the Earth in its orbit. It will then pass planet Earth (its orbit is faster than Earth's) and will reappear on the other side of the Sun, rising in the early hours this summer just before sunrise.

Venus is the really bright star in the west at sunset. It sets before midnight. It will be there a few more months and then its orbit will take in behind the Sun from our point of view on Earth.
