One of the major places that a lot of telemarketing companies get your information is from an item called a criss-cross directory, which is available to anyone at a local library. The other biggie, since most telemarketing companies don't want to buy lists, is voter registration, so think carefully when you put down your unlisted number the next time you vote. And the purpose of our existence is to make money for the company who contacted the temporary agency to hire us-- it's to make a sales pitch, request funds, or make you aware of a political candidate.

Telemarketing is a form of direct marketing where the telephone is used to solicit sales, close sales or do cold calling. It is a legitimate form of marketing -- however annoying it can be.
There are telemarketing companies that are hired by big companies to do phone call or telemarketing for them. Some of them are hired by big companies such as AT&T to help market for them.
They typically get their information from lists they buy. There are list buying companies out there whose main job is to get listings of people. For example, magazines often sell out their lists of customers to list builders, who in turn sell them to marketers including telemarketers. As far as I know, telemarketers are prohibited from using the telephone directory to solicit, though of course some unscrupulous ones with fewer budgets to buy lists use them still.
