I was told by someone who took voice lessons(for singing)that the best way to swallow a pill is to lower your chin to your chest. NOT ALL THE WAY, just a little. This opens your air way. Most people automatically think throwing their heads back, is the way to do it...that closes the throat. Biggest thing to remember, relax. I have a husband who can't take the tiniest pill with out a grand production! He thinks about it too much. Just relax. Be sure to drink plenty of water with it.

Put it on the very tip of the tongue. It actually makes it harder to swallow the further back on your tongue it's placed.
If they don't like pills or are fearful of choking help them relax by taking the pill with a drink they really like and give them something salty right before so they will feel really thirsty. I always eat peanuts or chips or something and then take my pill with a big swallow of ice cold Coke. Yum!
You can also drop the pill in the drink but you have to drink it immediately or it might dissolve. This will not work with someone who is going to drag their feet about taking it.
Another option is to find a compounding pharmacy that will put medication or supplements in another form - liquid, ointment, powder, etc.
Or you can crush the pill into powder and mix it with a spoonful of yogurt or pudding.

I taught my son by telling him to take a mouthful of water, tilt his head back with the water in his mouth, open his mouth, drop the pill in (they usually sink instantly), and then swallow.
9 times out of 10 this does the trick because with the water already at the back of the mouth, it squelches the gag reflex so pill swallowing becomes a non-issue.
Just be sure that for the first few times they do it over a sink or with a towel under the chin in case they can't follow through. Most times that's not a problem though.

I practiced swallowing candies and eventually got where I could swallow a pill, but I still had trouble. My great-aunt said that she placed her pills under her tongue, took a drink of water and threw her head back. It works everytime for me (look ridiculous, but works).

my sister told me the best way to swallow a pill when i asked her. she said ' put the pill deep on your tongue (almost in the throat) take a breath and gulp' this doesn't require water and is very good for small pills such as contraceptive pill. for bigger ones, same technique + water.

Well...I agree with the butter idea...I've tried that for larger pills and it does work...Also I usually take other pills with a carbonated drink......drink first ....then pop in the pill and swallow.....the carbonation seems to help!

Cover the pill in butter so it is very slippery. Put it in the middle of the tongue and give them an 8 oz glass of water and have them drink it all down.
