The conflict started in February of 2003 in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Violence erupted when two major non-Arab rebel groups, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) accused and attacked the Sudanese government of persecuting non-Arabs over Arabs. The government responded by arming local tribes to form an Arab militia, the Janjaweed. The Janjaweed has wreaked havoc upon the people of Darfur by savagely riding into villages, pillaging, raping, and killing. They have systematically burned and destroyed thousands of villages across the region, causing refugees to flee to Chad. And in the government’s plan to disarm the rebel faction groups, it has engaged itself in a wide-scale “ethnic-cleansing”, in which hundreds of thousands have been brutally murdered. Unfortunately, while innocent civilians are being killed, the Sudanese government continues to deny any connections with the Janjaweed and the killing sprees that have been conducted.

to those that element out that we are the two condemned for being the worldwide police or damned for not intervening in a topic...Amen. With appreciate on your 3 senarios: -Nazi, Holocaust....It wasn't our conflict, till the Zimmerman notice. the U. S. did not desire to take on the Nazi conflict device till they have been individually extra into the conflict. Thank g-d for Zimmerman's idiocy. -Darfur-actual, there has been genocide in South Sudan for some years till now 2003. the only reason human beings communicate approximately Darfur (regardless of the reality that, it is likewise horrendous and tragic) is as a results of the fact George Clooney launched a documentary on it. An American (Colin Powell) declared the action against the Dinka peoples 'genocide' in the 80s-however the UN redefined the region, so as that it does not would desire to act. the rationalization at the back of lack persons involvement is as a results of the fact the UN might flow loopy, as a results of fact no person is meant to act on an identical time as the UN is 'handling' the region, and to take action may be 'unilateral'. additionally, it would disappointed Russia and China, who've very few compunctions against drawing income from the region (that's why they have vetoed down action in Sudan for some years). i does not innovations the U. S. giving the SLF weapons, however...it would be superb to verify the Janjaweed greatly surprised with the aid of device gun hearth, for as quickly as. Rwanda-oh, there's a lot shall we've executed for Rwanda, pondering it became into pres Clinton-who did not choose an embarrassing land conflict in Africa so quickly after Op Black Hawk down-who pushed for a eliminating of peacekeepers from the section. of course the French backed out-i don't even blame them...this is like a sociocultural reflex for them to back out of possibility-yet a lot greater would have been expected of the U. S.. in relation to Rwanda, a US president permit thousands and thousands die for the sake of political convenience. that's why I snickered once I heard that the UN is sending him to Haiti...right this is to hoping he unearths Haitian lives somewhat greater politically expedient. this is as a results of fact of what that guy did to Rwanda that i actually hate him as a individual and don't comprehend how he sleeps at night, with a million lives on his experience of right and incorrect (then it dawns on me-he would not have a feeling of right and incorrect). Peace

Because everyone is doing a REALLY bad job of telling other people about it.
Also, instead of so much money on telling people, why not spend money to ACTUALLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM?? The Holocaust museum spent what was probably alot of money to make an exhibit about Darfur. Then they got Bush to come see it, and basically told HIM to go fix it. How about spend that money on whatever is needed for the Darfur problem?

USA gets complaints for going to war.
USA gets complaints for not going to war.
Is the USA the world police?
Should USA be the world police?
Remember USA is also in debt up to their neck which I hope my grandchildren will not have to payoff. This debt makes USA only seem rich when really we are poor.
Should USA let another country (like China) save the day?
Remember Saddam also engaged in “ethnic-cleansing.”
Yes many people know about Darfur.

Because we're a VERY insular Country- & we could care LESS about what's going on outside of our borders... It takes a 9/11- to wake us up & DO something about a serious problem somewhere else in the World. And even THEN, we tend to "react" first- and ask questions, later(And THAT'S why we're in the mess we are- in Iraq- today) .

Many people know about it but it doesn't become emotional until you see the pictures on TV. There seems to be a lack of interest by the mainstream American press. Maybe the victims are not attractive enough, in their opinion, to make good news copy.

because people don't care. Bush doesn't care. His attention is on Iraq. Oil is in Iraq. Oil = Money. It's not anything to do with "helping another country get on the right path". NOBODY is that nice in this world. It's all in the name of money, and the atrocities in Darfur are put on the back burner. Nobody goes in to help that situation. How sad!!

This genocide is on top of the slave trade still going on in Sudan, not to mention that alot of the poeple are starving. I'd like to know, what someone like me, a student, can do about it.
