My fiance just finished the first part of his training with an over-the-road trucking company. He has since gotten a raise, and because of this we assumed that he would be making more money. He's been bringing home around $250-$300 a week, but this week he only got around $100, working as much as he always has.

This just doesn't make sense to me. I thought that over-the-road trucking paid pretty well. That's the only reason he really got into this, so that we could get some of our bills paid up, but we're going deeper into debt because of it. Is the idea that truck drivers are well-paid a misconception? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Sorry, there is a typo: there shouldn't be an "a" in the first question.

Companies also will not tell you everything upfront. Driving can be good money ( have my cdl and my husband is a driver) however, you have to put a lot of miles on the road to get the pay. I would ask the employer if he has gotten the increase and why the money is not what you were told it would be. Is he having to pay back for the training? Yes cost of living on the road is VERY expencive. I would sugesst he get a cooler to keep food in and take canned items such as tuna to help not to have to eat out everyday.
Good Luck

Many trucking companies pay poorly when you first start with them. Also did he get a cash advance? That will reduce his paycheck. Tell him to avoid buying food at truck stops. I shop at grocery stores and get canned goods. A small crock pot will heat things up nicely. Also wondering if his company has a cutoff time for payroll. My stuff must be in by noon on Friday or it won't be paid for an extra week. And if it goes an extra week that changes what I get taxed. You can make good money driving a truck, but it does take some time to get the experience. Just starting you do have to put up with a lot of crap, so I would recommend that if he enjoys the work to stick with it. It does get better.

well he will get paid by the mile but it will be paid by the trip so it depends on when he turns in his trip pack. Since he is just getting started he will have to work very hard on time management to get his trips. Keep up with the miles he gets paid for each trip and watch how much time they allow to make the trip. Also check to see if he's taking advances this is part of his pay and his check will end up less. he should be getting about 500 miles a day but he may get a 1100 mile trip covering 5 days... not a good trip

trucking can be a good source of income. the more miles he gets the more money he makes. most trucking companies will give their drivers advances on their pay. this can decrease the amount of money that he brings home every week. he has to be carefull on receiving these advances.it is very expensive to work over the road. food and other necessities are very costly.hopefully he can budget his money and get plenty of miles. good luck

a lot of over the road truck drivers get paid by the mile and not by the time that they are working. it's common for a new driver to get time consuming drives, with low milage.

when you were new at your job, they gave you the crappy work too.
