The answer and calculations are simple but no-one has explained it to you. A 'percentage' or % represent a 1/100th part. Therefore if you take your number of 87 then that represents 30% or 30 1/100ths of the total (30/100). If you then divide 87 by 30 you would not get a whole number, ie 87/30 = 2 27/30. However if you think in terms of 10% then that is 1/3 of 30% so 87 x 1/3 = 29. This is then 10% of the total or 1/10. To find your answer you would multiply this by 10 , so, 29 x 10 = 290 being the total. To test the result simply divide 290 by 100 = 2.9. Multiply this by 30 and you get 87.

Simple you know so far:
Yes = 30%
No = 70%
If 87 people said yes and that was 30%. To find out the total you divide 87 by 30 to get the value of 1%. Therefore:
1% = 2.9
Number of people surveyed = 100% (obvious!)
Therefore 1 x 100 = 100%
2.9 x 100 = 290
So therefore, 290 people were surveyed.

%/100=is/of.....cross multiply, then divide and theres your answer
but if you dont want to do that this is the answer 290 people were surveyed

ya take 87% yes divide it by 30 and get one percnt by division, then you muliply it by 100
