It is better to just get in tune first. Keep in key and if a note is too high just work out starting in either a lower key or moving the high note to a different key. Find songs that fit your voice. Some songs are just not ment for you to sing. I can sing in a wide range but the song Sister Christian does not suit my voice no matter how I try.

first, try and get the middle portion of your voice in good shape. You will do yourself no favors if you strain for high notes without a good solid base.
High notes of themselves are really useless without the rest of your voice around them. Otherwise, they are only good for party tricks, and not for singing.
what about taking some lessons?

You can improve your vocal range with various exercises. You either need a good teacher or a good book to explain how to do range-building exercises.

Practice, Practice, Practice!!! Do some scale warm-ups. Go a little higher each time. I can do it, but it came natural with me. Oh, and one thing...don't ever smoke! That was my mistake! Don't hurt yourself while doing it.
