it traps heat in the laptop.. They need to breathe.. the fans are usually underneath the unit so unless you are charging the battery take it out when your plugged in. It is also a good idea to slightly raise the laptop off of the working surface.. I use a cooling pad but a simple straight stick under the back will do the trick.. Just let it have all the air you can.Your laptop will be cooler for it. And it will last longer.

I've heard opinions both ways. At last I was convinced (for an unrelated reason) by a friend of mine who retired from Los Alamos (he was a scientist there, and you can look up Los Alamos, to see what *that* means...)

He suggested, it's good for battery life, to "exercise" them. That is, run the computer, on battery alone, unplugged, until the battery is nearly drained empty. Then, and only then, plug in the computer to recharge the battery. And, in that respect, do *not* leave the computer plugged in at night, so as to avoid *overcharging* the battery.

I've had my laptop since October 2005 and only taken the battery out to replace it.

Batteries are smart now. The computer automatically knows when to stop charging itself. So no worries!

modern laptops are designed nowadays for the battery to be left in all the time, the charging circuit is designed to stop charging the battery when it is full, older batteries used to build up a memory effect if they were charged before they were empty reducing the working time of the battery but modern ones are designed to be left in. it will do no harm to take them out but it will be of no benefit to do this. they can be safely left in until they need replacing

i don't kno, but im 13, and my mom always tells me to take the battery out of my laptop when i am done using it. she says that its not for the batteries sake, but because people can still hack into the computer when you are away and it is turned off (just b/c it has a power source)....so in other words, yea, you should take the batteriy out..

leave it in unless you want to were out the contact of the connectors never mind the one about people hacking a computer that is off sounds like the mom needs to ask a question in the metal illness category there is no way unless it it hooked up to a network Even then someone would need to know the Workgroup name of the computer, if hacking is a concern look for updates on Microsoft if you think people are hacking your PC when it off What are they doing when it on?
