Yes, it's okay to pity them for losing their son, but you can't just pass them up as a motive for the shooting. From what I understand, neighbors of the Cho's described the son as a loner, but the parents as very kind, sweet people--but that is just from the outside looking in. The Cho family lived in poverty in South Korea, then moved here and started a fairly successful business. What may have happened in his childhood, we may never know, but it is highly likely it played a part in his actions, and 9 times out of 10 it was family related. If it wasn't family related, he either had an illness no one was aware of or something physically was wrong with his brain.

Seung was a paranoid schizophrenic; his video shows clear paranoid ideation of the most devastating kind. He thought everybody wanted to torment him for their own pleasure. His family didn't cause this in any way; it is a brain dysfunction.
And it is true that this often doesn't show up until adulthood.
It is extremely difficult to get treatment for an adult against his will; and he did not respond well, apparently, to attempts to help him.
I have great sympathy for his family, who are victims as much as the families of those he killed.

His parents own a dry cleaning buiness in the area, apparently quite wealthy, but we're poor before they moved here.
There is an older sister, who graduated from an Ivy League school - Princeton, maybe. I can't remember.

Family probably had no idea he was like this.
