I think that Gretchen, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish(before Tarja lef) Within Temptation, The Cruxshadows, Leaves' Eyes, After Forever, Visons of Atlantis, and Theatre of Tradgedy are really worth checking out in the symphonic metal field. Arch Enemy is different since a chick does gutteral vocals.

obviously people have their own ideas on metal.the early ones,late 60's early 70's led zepplin,black sabbath.early 80'motley crue,judas priest,maiden.late 80's early 90's metallica,slayer,megadeth,sepaltura,anthrax.late 90's pantera,mudvayne,slipknot.
