Both, but mostly responsibility.

Freedom is a privilege granted by the government and the religion. For example the US allows religious freedom, where most Middle Eastern nations don't. Iran runs itself under strict rules imposed by their religion. To truly be free you have to shake off the bonds of both government and religion or at least reduce those bonds to a point where you can be free.

But, mostly Freedom is a responsibility. "The Tree of Liberty often has to be watered with the blood of Patriots."

Freedom without law and order is anarchy. Anarchy always ends when one strong force rises above all others and seizes control, turning the society into a dictatorship. In Iran and Afghanistan the Islamic Clerics took power and control the nation. The President of Iran serves at the pleasure of the religious leaders, and if they lose confidence in him then he can be easily replaced.

Freedom has to be limited. I can be free to disagree with what you say, but I am not free to punch you in the nose for it. In fact a person's freedom stops where the other person's nose begins. So anyone who is free has to take the responsibility upon themselves to not harm others or prevent others from being free. Freedom also requires the responsibility to handle those that refuse to allow others their freedoms. In the crudest sense a murderer has to be put into prison because he denies the freedom of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for everyone they kill.

The cost of Freedom is never free; people have to defend it; that includes everything from the police to the judges, to lawyers, politicians and the military. It is the responsibility of these people to protect and fight for our freedoms and it is our responsibility to support them and in the case of politicians to elect good ones.

Freedom is freedom... it can only be taken away if you allow it to be. If you fight to keep it, and those trying to take it from you kill you, you have lost your life, but never your freedom. It is neither a priveledge nor a responsibility, but a state of being in which you are empowered to make and enforce decisions for your own way of life. if you do not have it, then your life is not your own; you are owned by another being and nothing more than cattle.

Yes your freedom can be taken away from you. Yes freedom is a privilege that every person who has that freedom has the responsibility to nurture and fight for it with all they have.

Freedom is a right for which countless people die for. It is not always given and sometimes must be taken. Why are humans individuals if we are not natually meant to be free? Why aren't we just part of a gigantic collective hive?

Freedom is a right.

Of course it can be taken away...if you threaten the freedom of others.
