We have a sump pump in the lowest corner of the basement (the last place to dry when it floods)

It is sunk in a hole about 30 inches across by 30 inches deep, all of the water collects in the hole and is pumped out before it can get high enough to flood the basement. There are also drain pipes dug into the floor that allow the water under the cement to get to the pit without wetting the cement.

Anywhere the water penetrates the most is a good spot to
place a sump pump. You need to find out the flow and
nature of the ground water and adapt your project tactics
around that, you may want to consider a french drain
system, this being a type of indoor 'mote' with gravel, the
sump pump being part of the mote.
Read thru this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basement_waterproofing
Some solutions may be found thru builderonline.com and
the project sections of store sites for Home Depot,
Lowes,Ace and etc.
Ask your neighbors how they deal with the prob and then
check with town ordinances, most towns have a web page
with local laws and building codes.

Place the sump pump not where water enters, but where it collects.

I would think so, also get some fill dirt and regrade the low area and have the dirt slope away from the house. If the water is coming from the walls, you can use a water proofing paint to help control it coming in.
good luck

i would check the level of the floor and put it in the lowest level as the water will go there first.
