Use a copy from a friend and just so ya know windows xp home is only $80, Windows Vista Basic is $100, and Windows Vista Home Premium is $160

I don't know about free, but you can get upgrade versions of Windows Xp for rather cheap these days. Less than $100 I am sure.
But, you will need to get more memory installed on the computer for it to run even remotely well on your current pc.

Free of course is illegal. Try an on-line site that sends you the link only and no disks or manuals. They charge less because they are selling the licence only.
