it's partially just a long-running joke. It's because many parts of New Jersey are industrial wastelands. But most of the state is actually pretty nice.

Because we are between New York and Pennsylvania. Our state is somewhat industrialized and we take some of the waste from New York and Pennsylvania and that were the jokes come from. I am proud to be from New Jersey because once you get out of the cities you find a lot of farms and open land

New Jersey is the butt of those jkokes becuz they are like the ugly neighbor to New York.
But New Jersey isn't all ugly. Most of Southern NJ is quite lovely.

yep....its kind of industrial wasteland. and the meadowlands STINK! much of the waterfront boardwalks are all boarded up.
however, i feel there is a poetic feeling to new jersey. hard to explain. its like a remnant of days gone by and old ethnic traditions and hard work.
the condition of asbury park is heartbreaking :(

Because the state is rediculously stupid. They have the strictest driving restrictions (Cell Phones, speeding, etc etc) But allow people like the governer's driver to legally drive 91mph.
