He was an artist of the renaissance age.And in this era the human body was the main focus of most paintings. You see at that time there was no photographt and painters were fascinated by dipicting nature and the human body as closely as they coluld.Note the realism i the paintings of this period.
The word renaiisance means rrebirth.A rebirth of the classic art of the ancient greeks. The greeks also worked on the human Body.Hope that helps.

He studied art for a year and then sculpture and was the probably the world's best at both. He visited Rome which was brimming with classical statues and his sculpture work took off from there. He was a marvel of the fifteenth and sixteenth century and unlike most artists became famous very early in his life

I think you meant why did Michaelangelo do sculptures of people. He (Michaelangelo) declared that within every block of stone or marble there was a sculpture just waiting to be released, so he chipped away until they were released - spectacularly!

He did sculptures because that was the art he was most interested in, and you can tell from his painted figures.

Actually, he did it because that's what he was paid to do.

In his day, being an artist was a trade - few men painted what they wanted to paint, they were hired for commissions. But those who hired you were either The Church (so you sculpted saints and biblical figures) or wealthy folks (so you sculpted merchants to look like heroes).

Good thing he loved his work!

er ... you mean why did he?
Or are you referring to someone alive today?

I assume he sculpted because he was very gifted and like many gifted people he had more than one talent and was lucky enough to be able to develop them all .... also, he was very taken with human beings, as a look at his sketchbooks will tell you ...
