To make sure you don't make the mistake of being 180 degrees out, set the engine to TDC on the compression stroke before removing the distributor.

You can do this by turning the crank shaft and observing when the rotor of the distributor is in the position to deliver the electricty across the wire.

If you are 180 degrees off, nothing bad will really happen. You'll be delivering spark to a chamber that was just evacuated of the air fuel mixture so the spark won't really have anything to burn.

The car won't start and engine won't go. That's about the worst that typically happens.

If you have an electronic ignition, then you don't have a distributor. You simply have a sensor that let's the computer know what part of the cycle the engine is in and it knows when to deliver the spark at the appropriate time.

Pull number 1 spark plug, turn motor over using starter until on top dead center of compression stroke. If you think your close then check the timing mark on crank pully(timing marks)Put on tdc (top dead center). Put in distributor and put rotor so its on number one plug wire on cap, may have to bump starter quick to get distributor to drop all the way down.. Tighten down holding clamp for distributor just enough so you can move the distributor by hand.. Put plug back in, hook up wire and try to start.. If it starts get timing light and time the engine accoringly to specs.. If this doesn't work, start over and try this again.. If you are 180 degrees off it may backfire thru the carb.. This won't hurt anything. Just won't start....

It is simpliest to mark the distributor where the rotor is pointing with a grease pencil.
