because they aren't made to run silently enough. it is a mechanical device. and digital clocks really don't tick and if they do... Call the bomb squad.. :)

The batteries that power the clock release a certain amount of energy that forces the gears to turn. The smoother the gears the less or no ticks there will be. If there are multiple gears or a pendulum, then there could be multiple ticks

i dont know why they tick but it really ticks me off i cant stand it my granny has thirty clocks in her living room and all you hear is tick tick tick tick tick tick no matter where you sit thats all you hear and then the coockoos and bongs and bells and whistles and there all set to go off at different times it drives me mad i tell ya plain mad.

I personally hate it, its so annoying but probably has to do with the ticking helps you lull into a slumber or something like that

They have to tick cause after they tock there must be something else for it to do til it can go tock again...so tick is it!

It's all about dramatics. When you are counting down the seconds , minutes and hours to something, it gets your heart pumping with anticipation.
