hey i once had to do this as part of my sociology a level!
I had to go on the side for arguing that it was a good idea which i was for some strange reason quite happy about
here are some things that i can remember coming up with:
1) It makes every one equal - if children can wear what they want some children will have all names and things but others will not be able to afford them so will get teased, and feel less equal to their peers
2) It makes it easy for members of the public to identify what school the child is from if they have a compliment/complaint to make
3) It looks smart
4) It gives a feeling of belonging
5) it gets children use to what they have to do in the future - most work places have a uniform those that dont normaly as for formal / smart dress so thats kind of like a uniform
and of course there are reasons for not wearing them these are the ones i remember arguing against:
1) It doesnt allow children to express their personality
2) it doesnt reflect indivuality yet teachers always preach everyone is different / individual etc
3) It's not comfortable
4) some schools have similar uniforms and the public could get them confused and complain to a school when it wasnt their pupils
5) it can be expensive to buy
the winning argument though was number five in support of uniform no one thought of an argument to beat it:
it gets children use to what they have to do in the future - most work places have a uniform those that dont normaly as for formal / smart dress so thats kind of like a uniform
hope this helps xx

I think this idea is dumb. I would never wear a uniform. I would either change schools or stop going to school. That is how much this means to me. It takes away from ones individuality. IT makes you just like everyone else. That is what we dont want. People care what others think of them, thats why you all want someone else to dictact what you wear. No one should be able to tell you what you can wear and what you cant. Its one more way for you to be controlled. What about the fact that poor kids wouldnt be able to afford uniforms? Most poor kids wear their school clothes as normal clothes too? Uniforms just cost them more money. Plus i am sure the uniforms would be uncompfotable to wear. Im guessing for a guy it would a slacks and a nice shirt. and maybe a tie. I cant wear stuff like that. Overall i think its a bad idea.

In your school, in your class there are boys and girls from all walks of life with different family circumstances. Some of their families will be quite well off and others may really be struggling financially.Should this matter to the pupil who is trying to do the best they can with their educational opportunities and to give themselves a good a start in life as they can.School uniform does two things. It gives a sense of pride to the wearer to belong to what they believe is a good school. It also means that children from different financial backgrounds are all attired the same.Without uniform you would have the better off coming to school in designer gear and the less well off in clothes from markets or down market shops which would emphasise the economic differences between pupils and this is not at all desirable. No uniform is the big equaliser and I think this is what most kids prefer. The whole point is that school should be happy and harmonious and I am sure that uniforms help in this respect. From the foregoing answers it would appear that most of you are American. I am from UK. while most of our views are in accordance there are one or two people who seem to disagree.

Well...
Good points behind school uniform are that they give the student a sense of community and values. this means that they are more likely to uphold teh rules of teh school, as they feel as if tehy are very much a part of the establishment. Also, it allows easy identification of pupils on school trips, as well as identifying between the pupils if there is more than one school in a town or area.
A bad point for school uniform is that it is often restrictive to the pupil. This is not only physical, in the form of the often-used blazer, but also deadens the imagination of several students. This can be very problematic in the arts, such as art itself, design subjects and even creative writing in English. It removes the person's sense of self, and so makes them feel as if they are only valued as a member of teh school, not as an individual person. This can lead to negative feelings towards the school system. Another bad point is that it can often be prohibitively expensive. This means that parents from poorer backgrounds may have to go without amenities in order for the student to go to a better school.
In conclusion, I believe school uniform is a bad thing. Look at the continent - they don't have uniform and their results are still comparable to our own.

I once represented my school in a national essay writing contest. The topic was this: "Does Wearing School Uniform Prevent a Student From Being Him/Herself?
I strongly disagree that the clothes someone wear has something to do with being yourself. Uniforms are there for a reason just like how rules are set for a reason. Rules were not created to do harm or be a disadvantage to anyone. Many schools and universities practice students in proper school uniform because of the many positive results and effects in can bring.
-Wearing a school uniform can help instill discipline in the students
-Having a school uniform is also money wise in the part of the students
-School Uniforms contributes in the organization, recognition, and identification of the students and the school/university itself.
The population of students complaining about the discomfort and the prevention of 'being themselves' are the fashionistas who long for showing-off through clothes. Clothes does not really hinder us from showing our positive characteristics, it is how we carry ourselves day in and day out in school, how we overcome obstacles that come in our way, how we treat and understand the people around us, the way we display are good personality is what determines an individual. In short, Action speaks louder than Clothes....

Depends on the school and the reason for wanting uniforms. The schoo li work for is going to a uniform policy. The main reason is affordability as well as keeping the gang problem down. We are all tired of seeing the boys pants falling off their butts, their gang type clothing (not colors but the overall appearance), and the girls with their fat rolls hanging out over the top of their jeans, their butt cracks showing, and their short skirts which are just long enough to get away with but when a strong breeze blows can show their rears. These types of clothing can be distracting and the attitudes that can go along with them make it hard to get things done in class at times. Students can still show their individuality with uniforms. Their shoes, added accessories, jewelry, etc... The girls would have more of an advantage in showing off their individuality than the guys would but from the parents stand points, at least in our district, they are sending their children to school to get an education. Not to see who can wear their pants the tightest, baggiest, etc....

+ve is that everyone loks the same so if you are from a poorer family them you should be able to afford the uniform so your child looks the same, so there is then no bullying about looking different because you dont have the latest fashion or because you wear teh same clothes all the time (ie the same pair of jeans and the same three tops etc)
-ve you are the same as everyone else
another issue is deciding what to wear in the mornings, with uniform there is nodecision to make - deciding takes ages!
oh and you have to buy more clothes (not necessarily a bad thing) so you look different on the weekend and when you go out

well if i had to do this debate which i have discussed in the past i would say it's a very good idea. There are always going to be people who would rather wear there own clothes for school but if a child isnt as fortunate with money then they could be the subject of name calling or worse. There's always going to be new fashions to keep up with for both sexes but some people will just fall into the catagory of say loser and then be lonely forever. Thats why im glad our school and most schools in britain wear uniform, its just good sense!
There's your argument! good luck

I think they are a terrible idea.
When schools have non-uniform days, its some more relaxed and friendly. The pupils feel more comfortable and almost seem to get along better.
As for saying less well off pupils get bullied for non-labeled clothes, most of the chavs (come on, you know it's true) wear the labels (Fred Perry, Berghaus, Calvin Klein, Lacoste), and there's me, Iron Maiden tshirt, bright red Doctor Martens, and no-one could give a toss.
Some people wear no labels, they're not treated any differently to anyone else.
People who say that just clamour for a disagreement without knowing what UK state schools are like.
