It depends on the age of the car, and type of engine.
If it's a modern car with a gas engine, and you put midgrade or premium in instead of regular , or put in regular when it says it wants premium, probably nothing. A modern car with electronic computerized ignition will adjust timing, etc, to prevent detonation from occuring, and damaging the engine. Detonation is when the fuel/air mixture ignites prematurely, and explodes instead of burning in a controlled manner. This causes that "pinging" you may have once heard in older cars.
If you put gas in a diesel engine, or diesel fuel in a gas engine, I sure hope you didn't start it. If you did, you'll have to have a mechanic drain the system. If you didn't start it, just the fuel tank needs to be drained, but there shouldn't be the wrong fuel in the fuel lines. If this is what happened, have it loaded on a trailer and hauled to a good mechanic. Don't even start it to drive it on the trailer.

well, just depends on the make and model.... the engine will ping and detonate... basicly the octane in the fuel jeeps the fuel form exploding while the piston comes up on the compreshion stroke. regular has usually 87 octane medgrade has about 89 and premium usually has 91 to 93 octane. the more octane the less likely the fuel will explode befor the sparkpugs light the fuel. I would go to the parts store and buy 2 or 3 bottles of octane booster and pour it into your tanks. if the engine was designed to run on 91 octane it will need it to prevent damage to the engine... but if the engine doesnt require 91 then you sould be just fine...

well assuming your talking about your typical 87 to 91 octane it depends. most cars run on 87 octane. if you put in 91 octane the only thing you will be doing is wasting money. however if yo uput 87 octane in a car that requires 91 it will cause pre-ignition or 'pinging' which over time can wear the piston and valves. so once wont hurt but doing it over and over will shorten the life of your engine.
now if yrou talking abotu putting deasle in a gas engine then thats worse it coudl severly damage the engine.

Do you mean octane content? Or diesel vs gasoline?
Well, that depends. If your car runs on premium, it may be fine. It may knock and ping and have power loss.
If it runs on regular, it may run better, but it might not do anything except use more fuel.
Recommended is to use what it says in your manual or on the inside of the gas cap access. You can try other octanes, I wouldnt do a whole tank. Go half, if there is an issue you can go fill up with what you normally use and it should run better.
Diesel... dont do it!

That depends on what you mean wrong type, if it is lower octane then buy some octane booster to add if it's diesel instead of gas you better get it drained or visa verse. Good luck.
