hey..well i'm having this dilemma with two career choices. i want to be involved with the deaf community (American Sign Language), but not becoming an interpreter, maybe a TA for the school system. there's that, AND also pharmacy technician. i would like to take both career choices, but my mom is telling me that they are both separate from each other and wouldn't be a good idea to do. so, i'm not really sure what to choose. i know, i've heard of choose it for your passion for whatever you want..but i have a passion for both, and a passion that's equal, so it's a hard decision...please give me some advice! thanks!

This sounds like the kind of thing you need to experience to figure out which is a better long range choice. I'm sure you can get a job at a pharmacy and get a feel for that type of work. You may be able to get a volunteer position for a short time in the school system. These are such different environments that I think you will find that you're much more comfortable in one than in the other and it will be easy to make the choice.

But couldn't you do both? Although they are different, only you can say that you can or can't satisfy each passion. You only get one life.

I suggest pursuing the pharmacy technician choice first since that is a more narrow choice. Doing it first gets it out of the way and should give you a steady paycheck. On your off time, you should pursue your interest in working with the deaf community. There are so many opportunities that you can pursue with this as an employed person and just in volunteering. So you could very well work as a pharmacy technician during the day (or night) and volunteer your services in activities for the deaf any other time. You could choose to leave the pharmacy technician career path and pursue activities for the deaf full-time. You could work in a facility for the deaf (or any other pharmacy really) where you dispense their drugs and can answer their questions regarding their pharmaceuticals since you will have the ability to sign.

Most people these days will have multiple careers, so there's no harm in preparing for both. Get a pharmacy degree, but take ASL courses as well (maybe an ASL minor, if it's available). You could do something like being a full-time pharmacist and then volunteering on the weekends; many churches, for example, need people to sign their services.

My opinion...My daughter has a minor in sign language and a major in Elem. Ed and Spec. Ed. It is very difficult to get a job using sign language. I worked as a pharmacy technician and made good money as most pharmacies are using technicians to work full time and the Pharmacist only comes in to check the prescriptions. Wegmans is a great place to work as a technician, you get paid well and the people at Wegmans are great. I would go as a technician. CVS pharmacy will train you themselves and certify you if you work for them. They pay well too and the hours aren't bad.

I think that you should do the one that has the most career opportunities (pharmacy technician) and then do volunteer work with the deaf.

You can then pursue both career choices.

It depends on which career choice is more marketable. I would choose the career you feel would benefit you the most financially, than when you move out on your own you'll be set. I can relate to your concern because I always wanted to do too many different things at once and I had to change careers at one point, which can be stressful. But good luck to you!
