coming from someone on our account. It was hard to tell if the letter was a warning or not, because it said that legal action could be taken over the material that was downloaded. I want to know if letters from an ISP like this are just a warning, or letting you know that you will be sued by the RIAA or MPAA. If the downloading stops, are we safe?

Cablevison sees programs such as limewire a violation of the user agreement. The program as such makes your computer a server, which is against their user agreement terms. Simple solution... make sure that the program you are using is not sharing your files, and is set so that you can not upload / people can not download from you. If you are only downloading, then you are not violating the contract.

Recently the RIAA stopped suing people over downloading stuff, and have supposedly agreed with ISP's to start a 3 strike rule. After 3 warnings, they cut off your service... Not sure if this is in fact true, or just rumors, but it's what I've been hearing for a couple months now.

were you using something like limewire? if so the RIAA can send phony files to your computer if you use a PC and then in turn contact your ISP asking for your information to sue you. I'd be really careful about that.

I would guess its probably just a warning. And as to what finest said you cant sue them back for invading your privacy. Any ISP that i know of has a user agreement that they can monitor such stuff.

It likely means that either RIAA/MIAA has complained to them and they decided to warn first.

Better stop running file sharing programs ASAP, and hope they don't come after you. I mean, once maybe you didn't realize it was a problem. If you still do it, it's gotta be deliberate.

I would be surprised if it were even a real letter. Someone is pulling your leg. Look closely at the senders address. Ive never heard of that-ever.
