My Toshiba Tecra S1 has totally crashed. when turned on, it either beeps constanly with a blank screen or is silent with a blank screen. I have no idea how to fix this or what the problem is. I don't think it's anything to do with the power supply. Can anyone help??

this is the beep pattern (with S being a short beep and L being a long beep):
S S S L, S S S S, S S S L etc.

I tried hooking up to a monitor, that didnt work.
I managed to start windows in safe mode but it crashed and the screen became pixelated. I may have caused this by turning it off via the button too many times.

and a correction, the beep sequence is:
S S L, S S S, S S L, S S S

I would try to unplug the power cord, take out the battery, and then hold down the power button. Then put the battery and/or power cord back in and try to turn it on. Good luck!

The beep codes you are getting denote a hardware failure.

It is difficult to determine what the codes mean as they are different for different BIOS vendors.

I would have to say that it is one of 3 things. Video, Memory or motherboard.

It is rare for a processor to fail on a laptop. Though that is another possibility.

Attempting to hook it up to an external monitor will not do you a lick of good because the computer is completing the POST routine.

Really, the only thing YOU can do is try a new stick of memory. The beep codes you described are generally memory errors.

Other than that, you will need to take the computer to someone who works on laptops to isolate the issue and repair it.

Keep in mind that Laptops are generally more expensive to get serviced, so you may want to consider buying a new one.

I have seen bad batteries cause failures like this. Like one of the other posters said right down the beep code and then go to Toshiba's web site and find out who supplies there BIOS (AMI, Phoenix, etc.). Once you have this you can go to the BIOS peoples web page and look up the beep code. This should give you some idea of what is failing.

If you have an old monitor, you can hook to the back of your laptop to the DB-15 video connector. Look for the FN (function key) and a picture that looks like a monitor key. This will be light blue and this will allow you to change output from your LCD to the DB-15 connector. Shut down and see if you can hookup and see if you can get any output on your monitor.

Like one of the posters, what did you do that might have brought this on? Sometimes it isn't your fault but the electronics fail.

Aside from the power supply that you can reset, try powering on your computer w/o the battery. The battery might be defective and can cause this.

And lastly, if you're a bit experienced with the computer. you can try resetting the RAM. Check with the manual that came with the computer or go to Toshiba website to see how to remove and put back the RAM.

this seems tobe the problem with most toshiba laptops.i have a toshiba m35,and it worked perfectly fine for almost two years, and then it was showing the same symptoms as yours.i couln't figure what was wrong with it,so i took it over to a repair shop and they fixed it for me.apparently,it must have been caused by overheating.here's a article i found on this issue.

It's memory card is full. You need to buy a new memory card. Maybe it crashed because you had a lot of files stored in your laptop. If you're not really sure, then seek a computer engineer's help.

you need to give more info.
Do the beeps have a pattern- ie 1.4.2.1.
If they do go to BIOScentral after checking sys for bios manuf. it will explain the beeps.
Typically with provided info you need a boot disk,w xp can call up recovery console.
