People will be people...and there will probably always be bullies. What our schools need to do is be more aware and ready to deal with it when they see it occurring. But you will never totally end it.
There are also a lot of other things all our schools can do to improve things "in case" this should occur again.
I have noticed that at Colombine, and now at Va Tech the students had no other exit to escape from the rooms. Why don't the schools take this seriously and make another "escape" exit from every room...whether it is a ladder down the outside, another door, etc. yet no one seems to think about this.
I also am not an anti-gun person. perhaps if they had had more teachers armed for emergencies, some might have been saved...we'll never know.
The crimes were done by an unstable person, who will always find a way....guns or not. The question is how do we better protect the students. I think extra exits are one way....and also ways to lock the doors from the inside easily.....Did you notice that the killer came back? They need to analyze everything and consider what would have made the difference.

Unfortunately, no. Schools are about keeping up their attendance and making money. And NO ONE wants to be the recipient of a lawsuit stemming from an accusation that they labeled someone a "bully" thereby damaged them in some way. I wish that things would change, that I could feel safe sending my loved ones off to their respective places of education. But nothing is for sure, and no one is really safe. You just never know when someone is going to plan out and implement an indiscriminate wrath of harm. Bullies are everywhere; work, school(students and teachers), in the car next to you, the loud mouth person behind you in line at the grocer, the daycare, religious institutions..........I have no hope that this violent act at VT will open the eyes of the higher education system. Sorry. I wish I did, I really do.

I dont think you can really do anything about bullies. All kids are bullies at one point in their life, some more than others and most teachers dont like taking action because some parents will think that they are being told how to raise their kids. I know my cousin goes to a school where the kids beat him up because hes very annoying and a so called teachers pet and everytime his parents complain my cousin just gets a worse beating the next day. So I dont think you can stop a bully you just have to hope that the person being bullied is strong enough to handle it.

i think this is a horrible problem - that may never be able to be solved. i think there are things that can be done to limit the "torture" - such as uniforms, then everyone would be dressed the same and that would take away some of the reasons for bullying - such as name brand clothes etc. there are so many reasons for bullying - kids will be kids,it happens - people are ridiculed for being different, and not fitting in.people in general are cruel, and i only see it becoming worse because the parenting is getting worse generation by generation. i do think teachers should pay more attention if possible to students remarks and snickering towards other students - but teachers are underpaid and have overfilled classrooms as it is,so what do you do?

A lot of schools have created programs to deal with this issue, but it's mainly reliant upon kids speaking up. This is the flaw, because the bullied know it will just get worse, the bystanders don't want to be outed....
Some legislation needs to be passed before anything happens.

No and no
My kids were bullied, as is just about everyone at one point or another, and they didn't kill anyone. What is needed are parents that pay attention and help their children deal with things not more rules that won't be followed anyway.

It's kinda hard to do something about bullies when the student being bullied is too scared to tell an authority figure.

not really......its not like bullies are the Tv shows ones.........who knows.....then again the main factor, love begins in the home.
And if you have low esteem to begin with, bully or no bully can helped your situation if you cant help yourself
showing how real and strong you can be stands out alot.....in that nobody can tell you otherwise or change your personality

I would like to say so, but i don't think they will ever learn-bullies are people who try to make themselves better. Don't forget about the other schools who had this problem too.
