my shyness

I grew up in a "so-called" dysfunctional upbringing and a dysfunctional neighborhood. Granted my mother and grandmother instilled strong values, morals and standards in me. We grew up poor and went without so many things that many would consider a necessity. We often went without power or water for months at a time. One pair of shoes lasted until they fell off our feet. I had a dead beat dad and a mother who worked way to hard to support us. I felt ashamed of these things for a long time.

Then one day I began to see how much that shaped my character and who I became. I looked around and saw so many that didn't survive it, all their opportunities were being wasted because they fell prey to drugs and alcohol. They continued the dysfunction cycle for a second, third or even fourth generation. Some of these people made really good grades in school and were quite smart. Certainly brighter than I was.

They may had wanted something better for themselves, but they didn't have the desire to pursue it because once you let the fear of change take over, there is little hope left. Most of them were probably raised to believe that nothing better even existed for them.

If I could change something about myself and my life it would be that surviving what I've survived has made me "noticeably" successful to society. Because I don't have a six figure income, a large investment portfolio, big house, luxury car . . . no one really considers me a successful person. At least not the people that I seem to surround myself with. I'm just someone from the wrong side of the tracks who is living on the other side now but still near the tracks. LOL

When I look at what I came from and what I could have done with my life based on the dysfunction around me, I get a little boost of ego about myself. I took a different path that led me away from drugs and alcohol and hopefully I became a decent person to others. Based on my past and where I am today, if it could be measured in a dollar amount, I sometimes think I have a level of success comparable to Donald Trump.

Too bad it isn't measured in dollars. A big house on a lake, a boat and a jet ski would be fun to have!!

I'd like to change my dysfunctional upbringing too but I think now that thing I would like to change the most is my inability to open up to others that I meet in person.

I'd like to be more open to other people

Of course you can try, but there's only so much you can change about your personality.

Anything else I know I can pretty much try to change.

And also, if you had a different upbringing you might not be the same person you are today and therefore, wouldn't be asking this question. =D

I was going to answer this question by typing that I would change all of the mistakes that I have made, but everything happens for a reason and without the mistakes that we make, we would never learn anything. So, despite my initial response, I wouldn't change a thing.

nothing! I get asked this a lot and truly I have been through some hard times but I know they ahve made me who I am today and I like me. It took a long time to like me but I do.

So all the mistakes I made and all the idiots I have come across over the years have molded me into a pretty decent person.

I'd like to go back to the day I started smoking and not start. I lost my voice to cancer because of it and am now a Laryngectomee and can't talk I now breath through a hole in my neck That would be a smart thing to do...

I wish I could have enjoyed the people around me more instead of being depressed and worrying about life. Most of the time it seems like people don't appreciate others and celebrate their lives until they go to their funeral and then it just seems to late.

i wouldn't mind turning the hands of time all the way back so i can make the right choices the next time but you can't change the past so i just deal with it

I wish I could have chosen a different father...but then again, I wouldn't be who I am today, so things have worked out just fine so far.
