Most burglaries are not random, they are planed. A part of the planing is selecting an easy access home and knowing when no one is home. The point of a burglary is to take valuable things not confront the homeowner.
To make a home safer make sure entry points are well lit and if possible visible from the street or visible to neighbors. You already have dogs and that is a good thing. No one wants to get bit even by a small dog. At night turn on a light not only in the room you are in but also in another room of the house. Most home robberies happen in the early morning not at night.
If you have a gun odds are you will never have to use it but here is advise given to me by a robbery detective. In your bedroom position your bed so you can kneel down behind your bed facing your bedroom door. Keep a phone at that location. If a burglar (make sure it is a burglar) enters your home go to your bedroom, close the door, kneel down behind the bed, dial 911, don't hang up but place the phone on the bed, hold the gun with both hands and point it towards the bedroom door. If the police have not arrived yet and the door opens and someone enters don't think just fire the gun.

You should have a plan. Have an exit route planned out if possible. Rehearse it like a fire drill, so you will be ready if you need to exit the house quickly. Depending on the size of your home, you should have an exit strategy from a few locations. If you have a firearm in the house, make sure it's in a safe place, but accessible. You have dogs which is good. Chances are no one it going to break in if the see or hear that you have dogs. It's good to be prepared for this type of situation, even though the odds are low that it would ever happen.

Dogs bark at everything, cats, squirls, wind, shadows, people way up the street, they have very good ears and a noise up the street or another dog barking, or may even want to come inside. It will be nothing more times than anything else. If you suspect someone outside, definately stay inside, switch on an outside light, stay calm. if there really is a problem call 911.

Keep your valuables inside your house or in a properly-locked storage shed. If there is a burglar, then they can't steal anything unless they break into your house. If they break in your house, shoot them with a taser and call the cops. If the taser doesn't put them down, club them in the head with a blunt object, tell your dogs to get them, or shoot them with a gun.

dogs hear a lot better than you do. they will bark if your neighbour gets robbed.. so relax. the moment you are sure it is in your house, you will be sure because you will hear: "auauauauaua..." from the bitten burglar.... or way louder barking than normal from your dogs.. if all that is happening... make lots of noise... call the police... or a sturdy neighbour... or run... or... do what YOU think is best... take another dog... empty a bag of marbles on the floor... no one can walk on marbles... :)

Let me introduce you to my friend, Mr. Remington 12-gauge Pump. The sound of that pump action in the dark is enough to make any burglar dive out the nearest window.

Call the police if you suspect someone is going to try to brake into your house, but make sure that there is really someone out side your house that you don't know!

Find yourself a heavy, blunt object, wait for them to turn the corner, and BLUDGEON them over the head. You have a right to protect to and anyone else in your house.
Me? I've got nice, heavy cane with an iron skull on the handle that I always keep by my bedside.
Stay safe!
