Haiti used to be called Saint Domingue when it was a French Colony. It won it's independence from the French around Napoleon's time. One of the main revolutionary's names was Toussaint L' Ouverture, who had taken control of the country but Napoleon dethroned him. Eventually the French lost the long bitter struggle and Haiti had it's independence. Unforunately Toussaint L' Ouverture died in a prison cell in France not long after he was dethroned.
Haiti also shares the island with another country, the Dominican Republic... which used to be a Spanish colony.
The Americans also invaded Haiti shortly before we entered World War I. In short, we were worried about German influence on the island (Germany was our enemy during WW1). The following decades were very bloody due to rebellions and harsh regional governments taking power.
Today Haiti is still one of the poorest countries in the world. Most Haitians are of African origins because it was a slave colony under the French.
Hope that's what you wanted to know.

It's the poorest country in the entire Western Hemisphere.
It was the second country to have a Declaration of Independence.
They have 14 airports there, and only 4 have paved runways.
It's really hot there.
Hope that helped :)
