My 5 month old starting teething just after she turned 2mos old.

Before I could set a sturdy, nightly routine she went from sleeping full nights to waking up every half hour and it was a nightmare until we switched to formula which has her sleeping 6hrs on a good night then waking up every hour after that until we get up.

I give her one feed when she wakes up at night ONLY if she wont go back to sleep with bonjela (for sore gums) and shooshing and picking up if necessary.

The problem is her waking up at very early hours and seeming to be too distressed to fall back asleep or just waking up and wanting to play.

What is the correct course of action and am I doing anything wrong?

It's really hard, and I feel for you. Just when your baby starts sleeping through the night, they start teething, or get sick, or go through a growth spurt. If they are teething, you can give them motrin before bed. That helps a lot and lasts longer than Tylenol.

The thing you need to be careful of at this age is that she is getting smarter now! She has you figured out! So, she may wake up and scream from being in pain, but now, she knows it works to get Mommy to come in, and sometimes, she might not really be in pain, but just wants to play. If you figure out that is what she is doing, you are going to have to start letting her cry-it-out for 5 days straight, and she'll start sleeping through the night again.

Of course, that won't be the end of it. But at least the next time she wakes up crying, you'll know it's for a good reason. Maybe she's cold, or has a fever or had a nightmare.

Just do your best to be consistent. My baby started waking me up 4-5 times a night, to breastfeed, and she was over a year old. I knew she wasn't really hungry, it was just a bad habit she had gotten into. So, I finally had to let her cry-it-out, and it broke my heart, but it worked after about 4 days. She is sleeping through the night now, and it's great. When she does wake up and cry, it's usually because she is cold or wet now.

Good luck!

Ask your pediatrician before giving your baby ANY medicine but my pediatrician suggested a benedryl/malox swish and it was a lifesaver!!!! It's 1/4 tspn benedryl mixed with 1/4 tspn mint malox and you put it in a medicine syringe and shoot it on their gums. The benedryl numbs the gums and helps with the swelling and the malox helps it coat the gums and the mint cools them. I did this before bed at night only. Make sure if you do it, it is after you feed her so it doesn't get rinsed off, and again check with your baby's doctor first. A friend of mine started giving it to her son also, worked for him too.
