You will get charged more on your exchange with them. Take some cash and your ATM card or Visa.

I take cash, Cancun is not a place to be concerned about. If people steal money, they won't rob you, they'll do it in your face when it's too late for you to do anything (for example, taking a taxi without asking how much it will be... or ordering drinks without asking for the price... or getting a lap dance assuming it's $20 a pop), etc. Like Charlie said, your best bet is to take some cash and get the rest at the ATMs; Cancun is so Americanized that you'll find an ATM at just about every convenience store.

Everybody (people, restaurants, stores, clubs) down there takes US dollars, and they do it for their convenience. For every $1 you exchange, you lose 9-10 cents because on average, the US dollar is about 10.90 Pesos or sometimess 11 Pesos... everywhere you go they will give you 10 Pesos for every dollar, it's just easier to calculate. It may not make a whole of difference to you, but think how many dollars they take on average per day, per week, per month, per year??!! LOL! There's defintely a loss/profit there.

You don't really need traveler cheques, more hassle than what they are worth, just don't carry all your cash with you and always keep a stash hidden (in your shoe or somewhere) for an emergency, you'll never know when you need it.

Take cash that's what i did. Of course don't take all $100's or large bills. You want to break down your money with 5's , 10's 20's and even 50's if you know that something is going to cost that much from the get go and of course 1's for those tips that get you very far. Cancun if very Americanized so everyone takes dollars or exchange the into pesos if you don't want to figure out the exchange when you purchase something. Because the peso changes daily, one place can take the peso at 10 pesos for 1 dollar when someone else takes it at 10.75 pesos to the dollar. If you use dollars for your means of purchase remember to ask first how much it is in dollars. Or a general way to figure dollar to peso conversion is ex. 150 pesos = 15 dollars, 1200 pesos = 120 dollars . You get the general idea, just take out the last digit and it becomes into dollars. Either way cash or travelers check just watch your money like your lady/man.=->

The very BEST thing to do is carry only a small amount of cash and use the ATM machines to get cash out as needed. Travellers checks are often hard to cash in Mexico. You can use dollars or pesos in Cancun...pesos give you better value. You can get either from the ATM.

Charlie has the best answer. You will spend a lot of time trying to cash traveler's checks and will not get the best exchange rate. Some places will not accept them. Take you ATM card and a small amount of cash. I live in Mexico and that's what I do. It is much safer and more convenient.

I just got back from Cancun. Take cash (and break at least $40 into small bills) and ATM. From the airport you should be able to pay 30 - 40 bucks to the hotel.

ATM's work but tell your bank your traveling. Also your bank might charge you a conversion fee.

dont worry about robbery..you should be ok, there are plenty of nice people. Just dont go downtown at night, go to the clubs and bars during the night (coco bongo & senor frogs!).

during the day do lots of day ativities like "Jungle Tours", "Chichen Itza", "Xcaret", & "Mayan Zip-line". Enjoy.

I would definately suggest Travelers checks - much safer to travel with and almost everwhere can cash them in. Have Fun!

Take traveler's checks, definately. If they get lost or stolen, you can have them replaced.

Better to be safe than sorry.
