Microsoft Word problems. When I try to indent...?

it indents the whole sentence. i'm doing a works cited page and if it runs over one line the second line must be indented but microsoft wont let me. is there a way to fix this?

1. Click anywhere in the sentence/paragraph you want to indent.
2. Select the Format->Paragraph menu item
3. In the Special list box under Indentation, click First Line.
4. Click OK.

This is a very useful dialog box to know about. You might want to study it and see what else it can do for you.

This is a "formating" issue. Since I don't know which version of Word you have - or if you're on a Mac or PC - the following is my guess.

I'd go to the Word help and type in "format", "indent" or "works cited" and they'll tell you how to do it; but, if you don't want to wade through their blah blah, I'll tell you what I do.

Make sure you can see the "ruler" at the top of your page. Near the "0" on the ruler you should see two triangles. One points down and the other points up. Highlight the area you want the indent, go up to the triangles and grab the bottom triangle and slide it to the right an inch. If you don't like how that looks, press Control Z. Try again. The two triangles move indepentently of each other, but also together, so you'll have to fool around a bit to get the format you need.

to be able to ctrl the way lines are goin to display, use the hanging indent and the first line indent independently.
Startin a paragraph and making only the paragraph's first line further from the margin requires usin the first line indent only. To customize the other coming lines, or to customize the tab space, use the hanging indent.
the first line indent is the upper part of the tool.

So far all I've managed to do is "undent" the second and following lines by diddling the margin pointers in the top ruler. There's likely a better way.

You need to adjust the margin for that sentence.

If you highlight the sentence that you want to be indented, make sure that you have view\ruler checked, and then push in the margin using the slider on the ruler.

Ok, here's the real answer. Highlight the whole sentence after you have typed it out. Then click indent. Voila!
