Sometimes cleaning up some semantic issues helps with one's understanding of things. First, energy is a property, not a material that things can be "made of". Second, energy is not alive in the first place, so of course cannot "die"; it's more properly said to be conserved. Thirdly, we have other properties too, like brain function, in addition to energy which, taken as a whole, define our being alive and who we are.

When we die, the chemical energy of our body oxidizes or is digested by bacteria to become *their* energy. Eventually, when completely depleted, the energy dissipates into the air in the form of heat, eventually radiating out into space where it came from in the first place (that is, the sun). The energy at that point, however, is in the infrared instead of visible light, so has a higher entropy and cannot be reused to perform the work of life anymore.

You are of course referring to the conservation of energy. Often misunderstood, the conservation of energy states that energy can be neither created nor destroyed. Unfortunately, the second part of that law, that energy can be converted, never seems to come across in physics classes.

In our known universe, there are two kinds of energy at the most abstract level: useful and useless. Useful energy is called enthalpy and useless is called entropy. As useful energy is used up, it is neither created nor destroyed, but it is converted into useless energy.

In the net, our universe is winding down; its useful energy is becoming useless energy. In scientific jargon, we say that the universe has a net positive entropy. That is, overall, the energy is converting from enthalpic energy into entropic energy. Entropy is increasing overall.

In the end, billions of years from now, our universe will snuff out like a candle and its temperature everywhere will be K = 0 deg Kelvin, absolute zero. This results because temperature is a measure of useful energy at work and when that disappears, temperature will be zero.

As to being "made of energy," I suspect you are referring to E = mc^2, which says that all mass has an equivalent energy level. This is also widely misunderstood. Mass is no more energy than energy is mass. Their physical characteristics are quite different. However, like energy conversion, one can be converted into the other (although making mass from energy is much harder to do).

In fact, E = mc^2 is really dE = dm c^2; where dE is an increment of energy and dm is a change in mass. For example, when splitting a heavy atom (like U238) two or more child atoms result. But the mass of the heavy atom (M) and the sum of masses for the child atoms (m) are not equal. In fact, m < M; so that 0 < M - m, which is math talk for saying that some mass dm = (M - m) was lost during the split. And it's this lost mass that is converted into an increment of energy dE. It's the energy from lost mass that makes atom bombs go boom and nuclear power plants go warm.

Thus, as pointed out elsewhere, we are not made of energy. We are made of mass (matter) that is made to function via energy. That enthalpic energy that makes us move, think, and generally function as living beings is converted to entropy. Most of that entropy is manifest as heat (your body temperature for example comes from that heat). However, not all the heat is entropic; some of it is enthalpic and can be reused. But eventually even the enthalpic heat will be converted to entropic heat.

It's helpful to think of energy not as an intrinsic property of the universe, but instead as a useful abstraction created by physicists (useful in the sense that it makes accurate predictions of observed phenomenon when tested). It's called scientific theory for a reason - it just so happens that thinking of the universe as containing a constant amount of energy that is transmorgified into various forms is useful. It's just a model.

Cells decay. Energy is burned. Organs deteriorate, and can no longer metabolise food to make energy.

When we die, our bodies feed bugs and bacteria...our energy is transferred to them. What is left deteriorates into the ground and feeds the lichens, grass, trees, moss, fungus.

Transferred energy.

We are made of matter. Matter can be converted into energy and vice versa (Einstein!). In any case, everything is recycled. The energy we get from eating things is converted into matter (our bodies), and structures in our body (e.g. sugar), can be broked down to make energy.
